Where do you write?

내 방의 책상 앞에서 쓴다. 카페나 도서관에서도 쓸 수 있었던 때도 있다. 하지만 십여 년 전부터는 다른 누구도 없는 방에서만 쓸 수 있게 되었다.
여행할 때는 랩톱을 가지고 다니며, 새벽이나 밤에 한두 시간 정도 호텔이나 에어비앤비 방의 책상 앞에서 쓴다(또는 쓰려고 시도한다).

I write at the desk in my room. There was a time when I could also write in cafés and libraries. But starting around ten years ago I’ve only been able to work in rooms without anybody else in them.

When I travel, I bring my laptop and write at the desk in my hotel or Airbnb for an hour or two at night, or in the early morning (at least I try to).

What do you have on your desk?

각도가 조절되는 스탠드 조명. 랩톱. 얇은 공책 한 권. 늘 바뀌는 책 서너 권. 여러 서점에서 가져온 책갈피들. 헝겊 필통. 필통 속에는 연필 두 자루, 조그만 연필깎이, 지우개, 세 종류의 펜이 들어 있다.

An adjustable desk lamp. My laptop. A thin notebook. Three or four books, although the titles change all the time. Bookmarks that I’ve collected from various bookstores. A cloth pencil case. Inside the pencil case are two pencils, a small pencil sharpener, an eraser, and three kinds of pens.

Which is the most inspiring object in your workspace?

메모와 일기를 쓰는 공책.
밝거나 어두운 창문.

The notebook I use for memos and journal entries.
The window, bright or dark.

What does your writing process, from gathering ideas to finishing a manuscript, look like?

그 과정을 만약 그림으로 그린다면 아마 미로와 비슷한 무엇인가가 될 거다.

If I turned my process into a drawing it would probably resemble something like a labyrinth.

What can you see from your window?

커다란 플라타너스 나무 두 그루의 윗부분. 지금은 잎이 모두 떨어져 가지들의 형상을 온전히 볼 수 있다. 빛의 각도와 세기에 따라 가지들의 색깔이 끊임없이 변화한다.

The tops of two large plane trees. The leaves have all fallen now so I can see the shape of the branches perfectly. The color of the branches is always changing with the angle and intensity of the light.

Have you ever had a particularly good piece of writing advice?

매일 일정한 시간 동안 책상 앞에 앉아 있다 보면 결국 써진다는 말.
때로 며칠씩, 심지어 몇 주씩 책상을 떠나 있다가 책상 앞으로 돌아올 때면 그 말을 실감하게 된다.

That if you sit in front of a desk for a set amount of time every day the words do come eventually.
When I return to my desk after days, or even weeks of being away from it, I really feel how true that is.
