So, you’ve finished your book, and you’ve started on the exciting journey of meeting with editors to discuss getting it published – but, how do you know when an editor is the right fit for your book? Editor and publisher Margaret Stead provides six questions you should ask yourself when trying to find the right editor for you!

My friend and former colleague Kate Parkin, one of the most talented publishers I know, devised a mantra, which we repeated when we worked together: Books and Authors. Without authors, and the beautiful books they write, there would be no publishing industry. In this current moment, when the spreadsheet rules, and profitability is at the forefront of the minds of those in charge, this is too often forgotten.

There is perhaps a third element to the essentials of book and author: the editor. Not so fundamental, but vital nonetheless. As an editor turned publisher I’m biased, but an editor is essential to the creative process for most authors – find the right one, and they could be with you throughout your career.

Let’s assume you’re about to meet the editor who wants to publish your first book – fiction or non-fiction. You’ve spent months or years writing, alone. It’s been the most intense experience, awful and exhilarating by turns. You’ve found an agent, and together you’ve worked hard to get it right. Now it’s time to hand over your baby. How do you know this person will do the best possible job with your book? Here are some questions you might want to ask…

What have I written?

Make sure you hear your editor talk about your work. Does their description chime with your feelings about it? Do you feel they ‘get’ it?

What are you proud of?

It’s worth exploring what your editor has published. Not simply because it’s great if they can point to previous hits, but they will ideally have worked with authors you know and love.

Must I murder my darlings?

Are they confident enough to tell you what isn’t working? Generally, if the relationship is right, you’ll find yourself agreeing with and understanding what they’re proposing to do in an edit.

What do you read?

Editors are simply readers. Do you have favourite authors in common? Can you see this person becoming your first and best reader? Would you feel comfortable showing them everything you write, down to the first few sentences of an idea?

Are you a fighter?

Do you feel they’ll fight tirelessly for your work – do you sense commitment and determination?

Are you a team player?

Publishing is a team sport: a core group from editorial, marketing, PR and sales will publish you. The best editor will make sure everyone associated with your book pulls together to make it a success.
