Toni Morrison was a Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist, editor and professor. She was the only African American writer, and one of the few women, to have received the Nobel Prize for Literature, and in 2012 Barack Obama awarded her Presidential Medal of Freedom, America’s highest civilian honour. The announcement of her 1993 Nobel cited her as a writer “who, in novels characterised by visionary force and poetic import, gives life to an essential aspect of American reality”.

Her work is widely loved – she is the most-chosen author by guests of the Women’s Prize podcast – and she paved the way for countless other writers who might otherwise have felt there was no place for people like them in the pantheon of literature.
