Based on interviews, discussions and intimate conversations with South Asian women, conducted in Urdu, Hindi or Bengali, Finding A Voice explores what it was like to be a migrant, a worker, and a woman straddled between two cultures in late 1970s Britain. First published in 1978, it gave voice to previously unheard experiences, opinions and feelings, examining themes such as family relationships, tensions at work, and living with racist and misogynistic immigration policies. A winner of the Martin Luther King memorial prize, Finding a Voice helped establish a new discourse on South Asian women’ s lives and struggles in Britain.
