After providing for those closest to you, even a small gift can make a lasting difference.
Leave a legacy where every woman’s story has the chance to be written, read and remembered.
Books have shaped my life. They gave me curiosity, ambition, wanderlust and a keen sense of justice. Time and time again, I turned to women writers to comfort or challenge me; their voices helping me navigate life’s complexities. When I take stock of the opportunities I have had in my life, it is with gratitude that I use my legacy to promote and protect these writers, their stories and the generations they will inspire in their wake”

If you are planning to make a new Will, the first step is deciding what type of gift you would like to leave.
The type of gift you choose will depend on your personal circumstances and future plans. We recommend speaking to a solicitor or professional Will writer to ensure your wishes are clearly recorded and can be carried out.
If you already have a Will, you may not need to write a new one. In many cases, you can add a gift to the Women’s Prize Trust using a codicil—a legal document that allows you to amend your existing Will.
We recommend asking your solicitor to prepare a codicil to ensure your wishes are correctly recorded and that your original Will remains valid. More substantial changes will usually require a new Will.
Residuary gift
A residuary gift is a percentage or share of your estate after all other gifts, debts, taxes and administration costs have been paid. Many people choose this option because it automatically reflects changes in the value of their estate over time.
Pecuniary gift
A pecuniary gift is a fixed sum of money. If you wish, this can be index-linked so that its value keeps pace with inflation.
Specific gift
A specific gift is a particular item or asset, such as shares, property or another valuable possession.
If you are considering leaving a specific gift to the Women’s Prize Trust, we would be pleased to discuss this with you in advance to ensure we are able to accept and use your gift in the way you intend.
A tax-efficient gift
Leaving a gift to a registered charity is a meaningful way to create a lasting impact, and it may also reduce the amount of Inheritance Tax payable on your estate.
Under current UK rules, gifts to registered charities are generally exempt from Inheritance Tax. If you leave 10% or more of your taxable estate to charity, the rate of Inheritance Tax on the remainder of your taxable estate may be reduced from 40% to 36%.
As tax rules can change and everyone’s circumstances are different, we recommend seeking independent legal or financial advice to understand what this could mean for you.
Not at all. Legacy gifts of every size help make a difference. Even a modest gift or a small percentage of your estate can help ensure that women’s stories continue to be championed for generations to come.
You can leave a share of your estate (a residuary gift), a fixed sum of money (a pecuniary gift) or a specific item or asset. Your solicitor can help you decide which option best suits your circumstances.
Yes. Your Will can be updated at any time, provided you have the legal capacity to do so. Your solicitor can advise you on making changes if your circumstances change.
No. Your Will is a private document, and there is absolutely no obligation to let us know. But we would love to know! If you choose to tell us, it simply gives us the chance to thank you and keep you informed about our work.
Legacy gifts help secure the future of the Women’s Prize Trust. They support our mission to champion women’s writing, create opportunities for writers, inspire readers and ensure that women’s stories continue to be heard and celebrated. Unless you request otherwise, your gift will be used wherever the need is greatest, allowing us to respond to future opportunities and priorities.
If you would like your gift to support a specific area of our work, we’d be happy to discuss this with you. Please get in touch before making your Will so we can ensure your wishes can be honoured while allowing the Trust flexibility to meet future needs.
In the UK, gifts to registered charities are generally exempt from Inheritance Tax. In some circumstances, leaving a charitable gift may also reduce the overall rate of Inheritance Tax payable on your estate. Because everyone’s circumstances are different, we recommend seeking independent legal or financial advice.
